King Saud University Medical City surgical team succeeds in saving patient from Foot amputation
A surgical team in King Saud University Medical City in Riyadh performed a rare surgery on a second decade patient who was suffering from a cancerous tumor on the bottom of the foot, after checking her for six years in more than one hospital and medical center inside the Kingdom without treatment solutions or diagnosis.
When the patient visited the orthopedic surgery clinic at King Khalid University Hospital in KSUMC, a medical examination was conducted by the orthopedic oncology consultant, Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Alshayji, and the case was diagnosed after conducting all the examinations and x-rays. The doctor discovered the type of cancerous disease and began working on the stages of the patient treatment plan. The medical team consisting of Her Royal Highness Princess Dr. Nouf Bint Alhassan bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, plastic surgery consultant, and Dr. Ibrahim Al-Shayji, met and a double operation was proposed by Princess Dr. Nouf, the first of its kind in the Medical City, which was approved by the medical team trusting God and then their ability Highly, determined the time, prepared the treating medical team and explained all the details and stages to the patient.
The medical team decided to perform a double operation, removal and restoration at the same time, and it is distinguished by the protection and the function of the organ (without amputating the foot), the speed of wound healing, the reduction of admission duration and the acceleration of healing, God willing, and discharge from the hospital.
The operation lasted about 10 hours, with the help of Dr. Abdulaziz Al Hindi, plastic surgeon consultant and assistant professor at the College of Medicine at Majmaah University, and Dr. Irfan Muhammad Arafa, foot and ankle surgery and joint replacement consultant. The first stage was the complete and final removal of the tumor and the restoration and preservation of the foot tendons. The second stage is the immediate restoration of the amputated part without the need for another operation. Princess Dr. Nouf used microsurgery, which is a free transfer of a muscular skin part from the back to the foot area with the accompanying bundle of blood vessels and linking it to the foot vessels and implanting it in the foot where the amputation is.
After the operation, the patient stayed for 24 hours in intensive care, after which she was discharged to the ward, and at the end of the week she left the hospital in good health to complete the remaining treatment stages, which consist of complementary treatment of the tumor as well as rehabilitation treatment.
