Annual International Awareness Day to Celebrate the Importance of Sleep
The Executive Director of the Medical City of King Saud University Dr. Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al-Muammar inaugurated the 2018 World Sleep Day under the slogan " Preserve Your Rhythms to Enjoy Life " organized by the University Sleep Disorder Center at the Faculty of Medicine and Medical City of the University.
It aims to educate the public about the importance of sleep and introduce them to common diseases such as sleep apnea, insomnia, Excessive Sleepiness and treatment.
Dr. Ahmed Baham, Director of the University Sleep Disorder Center, said that this event coincides with the 16th of March 2018, the World Sleep Day sponsored by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), an annual international event, intended to be a celebration and reminder of the importance of sleep for the body and call for action on issues related to sleep, such as recalling the importance of sleep for public health and the effect of lack of sleep on the life of the individual.
He said research has shown that lack of sleep affects memory and concentration and may cause depression and irritability. It can also cause many diseases such as breathing weakness, drowsiness, weight gain, poor student achievement, heart disease and arteriosclerosis as well. Pointing out that sleep has important functions such as regulating the secretion of hormones at night as the growth hormone important for young people; growth hormone reduces risk of developing cancer and stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration.
Dr. Ahmed Baham explained that sleep disorders are different, some of which are clear causes such as snoring and sleep apnea. This is a common problem in people. Sleep disorders consist of 87 disorders including involuntary movements and sleepwalking disorder. King Saud University sponsored the Sleep Disorders Fellowship Program since 2009 and so far, about nine doctors from Saudi Arabia, Gulf countries and Jordan got the fellowship.
