The launch of the ninth national campaign to raise awareness of scoliosis at King Saud University

Dr. Khaled bin Ibrahim Alhamizi, the Vice Dean of King Saud University for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, launched the national campaign for scoliosis awareness "Scoliosis 9", which was organized by the Research Chair of Scoliosis at the College of Medicine and KSUMC in the presence of Dr. Abdulhameed Bin Abdullah Alalaiwi, the Vice Dean of Scientific Research for Research Chairs at the University, and Dr. Saleh bin Fahd Aldhaheri, the Vice Dean of the College of Medicine for Academic Affairs. The event aims to educate the community about correct and medical concepts, early detection methods, prevention and treatment means and conduct an investigation on the public's misconceptions and correct it with evidence-based medical information through presentations, educational brochures, and responding to inquiries through social media and the e-mail of the Research Chair and the campaign.

Dr. Abdelmoneim bin Muhammad Alsiddiqi, orthopedic and spine surgery consultant and the Research Chair of Scoliosis supervisor, said that scoliosis is a deviation of the spine towards one side of the body by more than 10 degrees and mostly affects the age group of 9 to 13 years, most of them are females, and it effects the general shape of the body which causes the unequal position of the shoulders, the waist, the pelvis, the prominence of the shoulder blade, and the appearance of a hump on one side of the back, it can be detected - God willing, by simple examination methods at home, such as looking at the level of the shoulders and the hip, are they equal or not And testing the patient by kneeling and lowering his hands so that the back hump can be examined and whether there is any deviation. He indicated that scoliosis is a disease that becomes more severe when neglected to treat, and the condition deteriorates over time, which increases the severity of the curve, and causes dangerous complications for the body such as the displacement of the vertebrae and the narrowing of the thoracic cavity area , which may affect the breathing process, pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, and increase the patient’s pain.

Dr. Alsiddiqi explained that there is a type of scoliosis known as congenital scoliosis, where the patient has, since birth, deformities in some of the back vertebrae or a difference in the feet length, or ribs problems due to a neurological or muscular disease such as partial or complete atrophy of the muscles, lack of food or back muscle atrophy.  Adding that the methods of treating scoliosis for children if the deviation is from 25 to less than 40 degrees, the patient wears a medical belt that prevents the increase of the deviation only, while if it exceeds 40 degrees, surgical intervention is required. For adults if the deviation is from 10 to 40 degrees does not require any procedure except to follow up the case with the specialist doctor to check that there are no complications, while if it exceeds 40 degrees, surgical intervention is required. The event was held at the "Riyadh Gallery", where it witnessed a great turnout from visitors.
