KSUMC Becomes First Saudi Public Health Facility to Receive UN Accreditation
KSUMC has submitted its sustainability report to the United Nations, marking the first-ever international presence of a public Saudi healthcare facility. This step reinforces KSUMC’s leading role in integrating healthcare services with adherence to environmental, social, and governance standards, in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Ahmed Salah Hersi, CEO of KSUMC, stated that KSUMC aims to be a national leader in providing specialized healthcare, medical education, and scientific research in accordance with the highest global quality standards. He emphasized KSUMC’s commitment to initiatives that balance innovation with social and environmental responsibility, noting that these achievements were made possible by the generous support of the Kingdom’s leadership and the inspiring Vision 2030, which places human health and the environment at the center of sustainable development.
Dr. Saleh Abdulrahman bin Saleh, Chief Strategic Planning Officer at KSUMC, emphasized that the report highlighted multiple areas reflecting KSUMC deep commitment to sustainability and excellence. Environmental leadership was among the most prominent areas as KSUMC has successfully reduced energy consumption by 31%, equivalent to over 41.5 million kWh annually. Additionally, the adoption of solar energy as a renewable source contributed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,746 tons per year. KSUMC has also implemented a tree-planting project with more than 47,000 trees in support of the “Green Saudi” initiative and launched an electric vehicle charging network as part of the transition to clean energy.
Dr. Saleh added that KSUMC’s efforts extend beyond environmental sustainability to social responsibility. Its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement is reflected in women holding 31% of leadership positions, providing over one million outpatient services annually, training more than 8,000 healthcare professionals through 126 accredited medical programs, and logging over 5,000 volunteer hours in various health initiatives, exemplifying a culture of institutional and community giving.
Innovation and research excellence remain cornerstones of KSUMC’s strategy, as it continues to enhance its scientific standing by developing more than ten patented medical devices and organizing the “Digital Health Innovation Hackathon” (Healthon) with prizes exceeding SAR 600,000 to encourage creative solutions. Over 261 scientific papers were published, contributing to the advancement of medical science globally, underscoring research and innovation as key tools in developing the healthcare system.
The report also addressed the humanitarian impact of KSUMC’s activities, including performing over 500 cochlear implant surgeries in collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and serving more than 60,000 families through the “Doctor for Every Family” initiative, representing a pioneering model of community healthcare for vulnerable populations.
In operational efficiency, Dr. Saleh noted that KSUMC achieved financial savings exceeding SAR 528 million through cost-efficiency projects, reflecting high standards of governance and financial discipline. Moreover, KSUMC has received over 30 international accreditations, confirming its commitment to providing comprehensive and sustainable healthcare according to the highest global quality standards.
Dr. Saleh concluded by emphasizing that these achievements were made possible through integrated efforts and outstanding institutional work by all departments and staff at KSUMC, aimed at achieving sustainability standards and reinforcing its leadership in the healthcare sector both locally and internationally.
