KSUMC’s Medical Team Succeeded in Removing a Large, Rare Tumor from a Patient’s Chest

A medical-surgical team in Thoracic Surgery at King Saud University Medical City in Riyadh managed to remove a benign tumor from the chest cavity of a 70-year-old female patient. The team reconstructed it using a synthetic mesh. The surgery was led by Dr. Suha Kamal Kaaki, a thoracic surgeon consultant, assistant professor, and medical faculty member, and Dr. Moataz Al-Aqeel, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Suha Kaaki explained that the size of the primary tumor is 10 cm, with the extension of another tumor of the size of 3 cm. It is considered one of the rare and complex tumors. The difficulty, in this case, lies not only in removing it but also in reconstructing the chest wall after removing the tumor. This type of surgery requires removing a large part of the chest wall, which contains some of the ribs and muscles associated with the tumor, and the tumor's proximity to the heart and lung. As soon as the patient was diagnosed, a specialized medical team was formed, and after reviewing the case, the assigned medical team approved the surgery.

Dr. Suha indicated that the operation lasted about 6 hours, and the tumor was removed entirely, thanks to Allah, without any complications. The patient was transferred to the intensive care unit and recovered without complications. The patient was discharged from the hospital in good health.

It is noteworthy that King Saud University Medical City serves as a benchmark for other institutions where the latest and most complex surgeries are performed using advanced technologies and under the management of consultants with international expertise.
