(Scoliosis 3) Launches at King Saud University Medical City
Under the sponsorship of Ahmed Al-Aameri, Vice Rector for Graduate Studies & Research, and the attendance of Dr. Fahad Al-Zamil, Dean of the College of Medicine and Supervisor of University Hospitals, the third national campaign has launched to raise awareness of Scoliosis and was organized by the Scoliosis Research Chair on Tuesday, 15 April, 2014 AD at the Medical City’s College of Medicine main park, King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh. The event was attended by vice deans of the College of Medicine, a number of department heads, physicians and consultants of the Medical City, where they toured sections of the exhibition and were briefed on its contents. Dr. Abdulmonem Alsiddiky, Orthopedics and Spine Surgery Consultant and Supervisor of the Scoliosis Research Chair, presented a practical demonstration of corrective surgeries for the spine using spine models which in return had a major role in comprehending the process of the scoliosis corrective surgery. Following the presentation, the audience watched a video clip introducing the disease and the stages of development and implications for the human body, as well as treatment methods. Dr. Alsiddiky said that the campaign aims at informing the public, especially the parents, of scoliosis and how to detect it in its early stages, as well as prevention measures. He added that scoliosis is one of the most common diseases around the world, and often discovered quite late by some people leading to major health implications. In addition, Dr. Alsiddiky confirmed that this year's program will include several events to be organized at both the Kingdom and Sahara Shopping Malls on 17-18 April, 2014, as well as 24-25 April, 2014 at Panorama and Centria Mall in Riyadh. He added that there will be awareness leaflets and token gifts for the visitors. The KSU College of Medicine student volunteers and participants will inform the visitors about the disease, discovery and treatment methods. Under the direct supervision of Scoliosis Research Chair, the Saudi scoliosis website (www.saudiscoliosis.com) was launched during the opening which provides documented medical information about the disease in detail, and consultation services for patients who suffer from scoliosis. It is worth mentioning that the campaign was an the initiative taken by KSU College of Medicine students, and students from other colleges under the supervision of Dr. Abdulmonem Al Siddiky, Orthopedics and Spine Surgery Consultant and Supervisor of the Scoliosis Research Chair.
