Study Confirms KSUMC’s Success in Endodontic Treatment for People with Disabilities
BDJ Open Journal, in collaboration with Nature Journal, published the results of a study conducted by a Saudi medical team in the Dental University Hospital at King Saud University, which achieved great success in endodontic treatment of permanent teeth for patients with disabilities under general anesthesia. The results of the study showed that the success rates were high, reaching 98%, as the treated teeth remained healthy during follow-up periods that extended up to 39 months.
Dr. Fahd Al-Sulaih, Endodontics Consultant at the Dental University Hospital and Associate Professor at the College of Dentistry in KSU, explained that the research team focused mainly on documenting the types of disabilities of the people that were treated, and the procedures and materials used in endodontic treatment, noting that the research subjects were carefully and thoroughly examined and monitored regularly in the clinic before and after general anesthesia.
Dr. Fatima Al-Bishri, General Dentistry Consultant at the Dental University Hospital, confirmed that the indications for general anesthesia in some patients with disabilities included autism, ADHD or both in accordance with previous research that has shown a high incidence of tooth decay among people with autism in addition to other studies that indicate a relationship between autism and ADHD and the patient’s need for endodontic treatment under general anesthesia.
